Slavery and the Making of America, a 2005 PBS video series, will be presented at Charles Pinckney National Historic Site. Each Saturday in July a different volume in the four part series will be shown. This landmark series examines the history of slavery in the United States and the integral role it played in shaping the new country’s development.

Saturday, July 5, 2:00 PM
Volume I The Downward Spiral covers the period from 1619 through 1739. It spotlights the origins of slavery in America and culminates with the bloody Stono Rebellion in South Carolina.

Volume II Liberty in the Air spans the 1740s through the 1830s. It explores the continued expansion of slavery in the colonies, the evolution of a distinct African-American culture and the roots of the emancipation movement.

Volume III Seeds of Destruction looks at the period from 1800 through the start of the Civil War when slavery saw an enormous expansion and entered its final decades.

Volume IV The Challenge of Freedom takes viewers through the Civil War, Reconstruction and beyond as it follows the life of South Carolinian Robert Smalls.

Charles Pinckney National Historic Site preserves a 28-acre remnant of Snee Farm, the lowcountry plantation of Charles Pinckney, a founding father and framer of the United States Constitution. Located at 1254 Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant, the park is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Days.
