Archaeology Extravaganza Family Fun Event

10/09/2009

Location: The Dill Sanctuary
Address: 1163 Riverland Drive on James Island
Web Site: http://www.charlestonmuseum.org

On October 10, families are invited to experience life in the shoes of an archaeologist from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Dill Sanctuary, located at 1163 Riverland Drive on James Island. The Dill Sanctuary contains prehistoric, colonial, antebellum, and postbellum archaeological sites. The event is free for Museum members, $5/adults, $5/children, and free for children under 3.

Interactive activities for children include a mock dig and prehistoric cave painting. Participants will also have the opportunity to create an arrowhead necklace. Educational presentations about spear throwing and even prehistoric tool construction will be demonstrated by Scott Jones of Media Prehistoria, a program dedicated to “exploring, rediscovering and educating the public about early technology and lifeways.”

Families will also have the chance to step back in time with local archaeologists from The Charleston Museum and Brockington and Associates. Brockington’s archaeologists will offer a demonstration and activity on putting pottery shards back together. In addition to hands on activities, The Charleston Museum will have informational displays from its archaeology department.

Each month The Charleston Museum offers a special Saturday program dedicated to providing an educational and exciting experience for the whole family. Join us each month for a different themed event including presentations and craft projects for children of all ages. Themes include archaeology, historic crafts, animals, and more.
