Middleton Place Rolls Out Summer Family Fun Packages
For Immediate Release, April 2009
A summer filled with activities for all ages awaits families at Middleton Place National Historic Landmark. The plantation is gearing up with summer-fun offerings for every member of the family: nature walks, kayaking, carriage rides … the rest is history. The options are many and varied, but all offer an adventure of historic proportion!
This summer, during the months of June, July and August, kids 15 and younger will be admitted to the Gardens and Plantation Stableyards free with a paying adult (limit three children per adult). With so many interesting and entertaining options, there’s something for everyone:
The Nature Enthusiast - take a walk through an oak-hickory forest, around a black-water cypress swamp and alongside a flooded rice field. Trained naturalists will discuss the history of rice culture as well as the diverse flora and fauna that are found in these ecosystems. See waterfowl, numerous species of birds, alligators and more.
The History Buff – Whether its landscape architecture, Revolutionary and Civil War history, agriculture or African American history, Middleton Place has it all. The House Museum displays 18th and 19th century Middleton family china, silver, furniture and portraits. Guided tours introduce visitors to the Middleton family and their very important role in American history. Learn about the dynamic African American population that lived and worked in the Middleton plantation system on an African American Focus Tour that includes stops at the Demonstration Rice Field, Rice Mill, Plantation Chapel, Slave Cemetery and Stableyards. In Eliza’s House, an 1870s Freedman’s dwelling, visitors can see the permanent exhibit Beyond the Fields: Slavery at Middleton Place. The exhibit is richly illustrated with rare images, archeological artifacts and historical documents focusing on the daily lives of slaves and their work beyond the fields in the Middleton plantation system as early as 1738.
The Green Thumb – Be inspired on a stroll through America’s oldest landscaped gardens. The gardens which Henry Middleton envisioned and began to create in 1741 reflect the grand classic style in vogue in Europe and England in the early 18th century. See uninterrupted vistas, parterres, intimate garden rooms and ornamental canals designed with mathematical precision. Complimentary garden overview tours are offered on the hour; 10 am to 3 pm. Visit the Garden Market and Nursery and take home a piece of history. Rare camellia japonicas, Middleton oak seedlings and other plants are available for purchase.
The Outdoorsman – Hiking, kayaking, biking, horseback riding are just a few of the many outdoor activities that can be enjoyed at Middleton Place. Explore the tidal creeks that feed the pristine marshlands around the Ashley River on a guided or self-guided Kayak Tour. Take the South Rice field Excursion and view various wildlife including bald eagles, alligators, river otters, migrating warblers and wading birds. A guided horseback trail ride is an exceptional way to experience the natural beauty of Middleton Place. Travel back in time to Henry Middleton's day by touring the plantation on horseback.
The Animal Lover – Both wildlife and domestic animals abound. In the Stableyards see the types of animals appropriate to a plantation of the 18th and 19th centuries: cashmere goats, sheep, horses, chickens, hogs, a cow and even two water buffalo. See strutting peacocks and ornamental swans, bald eagles, alligators, native birds and more. Matched teams of draft horses pull hand-crafted carriages on tours through a bamboo forest and outlaying areas of the plantation.
The Foodie - Experience the many aspects of Low Country cuisine as harvested and prepared at Middleton Place. Culinary enthusiasts will enjoy seeing the many crops, herbs, spices and game that served as an abundant source of food for plantation inhabitants and learn how Carolina Gold rice is planted, maintained and harvested at Middleton Place. Enjoy a traditional southern lunch that features Hoppin’John, shellfish and grits, collard greens, corn pudding and more at the Middleton Place Restaurant.
The adjacent Inn at Middleton Place offers relaxed accommodations and includes admission to the Gardens, House and Stableyards at Middleton Place and a full breakfast. Rooms are available at rates starting as low as $169 and kids are free. For additional information, visit the website www.middletonplace.org or call (843) 556-6020.
