Reference Materials: The Avery Research Center offers information on African American and Lowcountry history. The center has several personal collections from African Americans in the Charleston community and also has genealogy information. The center houses letters, diaries, African American newspapers, church records, oral histories and interviews, account books, family histories, and business directories. Manuscript collections include the South Carolina Freedman’s Bureau Records and Records of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. Reading room and archives open noon – 5 p.m., Monday – Saturday. Tours of the building and museum galleries are conducted between the hours of noon and 5 p.m., Monday – Saturday. Group tours by appointment only.

Reference Materials: Extensive collection of books, maps, manuscripts, images, local historical documents, genealogical information, census data and architectural records relating to Charleston and South Carolina, including directories, birth and death records, a building-by-building guide to Charleston’s Historic District and access to local newspaper publications dating back to 1731. The Library answers nearly 1.8 million reference questions annually, the highest in South Carolina, and is the top public library statewide for patron visits, circulation, programs offered and program attendance. Its South Carolina Room and Special Collections are dedicated to maintaining and preserving important records and historic documents. 16 branches countywide

Reference Materials: The Charleston Museum stores information on Civil War history, Lowcountry history, natural history and history of collections and decorative arts. The museum does not offer lineage information.

Reference Materials: The College of Charleston library has two major special collections concentrated on Audubon and books on historical Charleston. The library’s research materials include those of the Avery Research Center on African American History. Open 8 a.m. – midnight, Monday – Sunday.

The Daniel Library at The Citadel

Reference Materials: The Citadel Library offers information on the Lowcountry, Citadel and military history. Photographs from the archives highlight the exhibits, which portray the military, academic, social and athletic aspects of cadet life. The Citadel also has a museum that has original General Mark Clark documents. Open 2 p.m. – 5p.m. Sunday – Friday; 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday.

Reference Materials: The Historic Charleston Foundation does have a staff library, however it is not open to the general public. The Preservation Division is helpful with house and building history, and can provide additional resources if appointments are made by phone.

Library Society

Reference Materials: The Library Society houses genealogy information, multitudes of documents on Charleston history and a published immigration list of those who came to Charleston on ships. The Library Society is open 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday. There is a research fee of $3 per day for nonmembers. There are also weekly and monthly rates available. Membership in the Library Society is $35 per year.

Reference Materials: The Post and Courier’s clip files are available for use. Clips can be processed by photocopy, fax or e-mail. Archives since 1994 can be accessed through Charleston.net. Clip files are $3 per copy and all of the files are computerized. The Post and Courier Library is staffed 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday.

Reference Materials: The Preservation Society of Charleston has information on homes and buildings in the Charleston area. They can provide a house history for many of the residences in and surrounding the historic district. The Research Room is located above the shop on King Street and it houses old documents, slides, sketches, etc. Please call ahead of time for an appointment

The Historical Society also has a collection of books, pamphlets and maps supporting genealogical and historical research. Hours are Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Everyone welcome. $5 daily visitor fee.
