For Immediate Release, February 2004

Chanda Rubin and Elena Dementieva have officially entered the 2004 Family Circle Cup scheduled for April 10th - 18th at the Family Circle Tennis Center at Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina. Currently ranked No. 9 and 10 respectively, Rubin and Dementieva will add to an already impressive player field that includes world No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne, Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Jennifer Capriati and Venus Williams.

"Both Chanda and Elena represent some of the most talented players on the WTA Tour," commented Frankie Whelan, Executive Director of the Family Circle Cup. "Both had remarkable seasons last year and the Family Circle Cup is the perfect venue to show off their athletic talents on the court."

As a seasoned veteran of 14 years, Rubin has set many milestones in her career, and in 1996 reached a career high singles ranking of No. 6. She has won seven WTA Tour singles, and ten doubles titles, including a Grand Slam doubles crown at the 1996 Australian Open. In singles competition, she has won singles titles on all four surfaces, and her best Grand Slam result came in 1996 at the Australian Open when she reached the semifinals. Rubin turned in one of her best years on the tour in 2003 by posting her first Top 10 finish at the end of the year. During the year, she won two singles titles in Madrid, Spain and Eastbourne, England.

Dementieva's 2003 season was a busy one playing 27 tournaments, more than any other Top 10 player. Last year she reached a career high No. 8 in the world and won three WTA Tour singles titles (Amelia Island, Bali and Shanghai). At Amelia Island, she defeated four seeded players to win the title including Justine Henin-Hardenne and Lindsay Davenport. She made headlines in the tennis world at the 2000 U.S. Open when she advanced to her first Grand Slam semifinal becoming the first Russian woman to accomplish that feat at the U.S. Open. That same year she won the silver medal at the Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
