CHARLESTON VOTED NO. 1 IN SOUTHERN LIVING’S 2024 SOUTH’S BEST AWARDS

CHARLESTON, S.C. – For the eighth year running, the readers of Southern Living ranked the Charleston region No. 1 in its annual South’s Best awards.

The awards recognize readers’ favorite destinations and experiences, covering everything from cities and small towns to restaurants and hotels.

Southern Living noted, “The Holy City's gorgeous architecture, picturesque streets, and welcoming Lowcountry spirit continue to impress year after year…we love every last detail that makes Charleston the shining star it is.”

“This recognition from the readers of such a respected and longstanding publication strengthens our region’s legacy as an iconic destination and is evidence of our ability to remain relevant in a highly competitive industry,” said Dan Blumenstock, Board Chair of Explore Charleston. “From our vibrant urban core to our beautiful islands, visitors continue to make meaningful connections with the people and places of our unique and engaging community, and we can never take that for granted.”

Other Charleston area honorees in this year’s South’s Best awards include:
The International African American Museum was voted the South’s Best New Museum.

Readers selected Vern’s as the South's Best New Restaurant in South Carolina.

Isle of Palms, Kiawah Island, Sullivan’s Island, Folly Beach and Seabrook Island were included among the top 10 Best Islands in South Carolina.

Tourism is one of the region’s leading economic drivers. In many ways, its success facilitates economic development and quality of life investments. According to the College of Charleston’s Office of Tourism Analysis, the total economic impact of the visitor industry in the Charleston area grew to a record $12.8 billion in 2022, and the percentage of countywide sales attributable to tourism increased to 23.8%. Travel and hospitality accounts for over 51,000 local jobs.
