Gilligan’s Seafood Restaurants have been designated a Sustainable Seafood Initiative Gold Partner by the South Carolina Aquarium
For Immediate Release, August 2009
Gilligan’s Seafood Restaurants menus have received a Gold Partner certification based on the sustainability of its seafood products. Shrimp, flounder, clams and oysters are among many items at Gilligan’s that the South Carolina Aquarium deems sustainable through their Sustainable Seafood Initiative.
Sustainable Seafood refers to fish that are caught or farmed with consideration for the long-term viability of individual marine species and for the oceans’ ecological balance as a whole. The Sustainable Seafood Initiative, a conservation program of the South Carolina Aquarium, teaches chefs about sustainable seafood and how the decisions they make today can ensure that we have fish in the future. They also support the use of seafood produced by the U.S. fishing industry, which follows conservation-based regulations that are not often required by other countries.
Gilligan’s restaurants make every effort to obtain seafood from sustainable and, as often as possible, domestic and local sources. In addition, agree to not serve or sell Chilean sea bass, orange roughy and imported shark because of concerns regarding the status of these species in the wild.
Acknowledging the importance of eating local, Gilligan’s has proclaimed that, “Friends don’t let friends eat imported shrimp.” By using local sources for shrimp and other seafood, not only is the food fresher, it helps boost the local economy. Their new location downtown on the Market (14 N. Market Street) features their famous hushpuppies and their certified sustainable menu, which can also be found on their website (www.gilligans.net).
