2nd Annual Captain's Cup For Cainhoy Kids - Charity Golf Tournament Announced
For Immediate Release, September 2008

The Family Circle Tennis Center, Bauer International’s Island House, and the Spirit of South Carolina will present the second annual Captain’s Cup charity golf tournament on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at the Daniel Island Club. Proceeds from this event will be used to underwrite educational programs for youth of the Cainhoy Peninsula aboard the Spirit of South Carolina. A limited number of foursomes are available for tax deductible purchase, with all proceeds benefiting Cainhoy youth.

The proceeds of this event will provide approximately 155 children with an experience aboard the Spirit of South Carolina, in accordance with the mission of the South Carolina Maritime Foundation, where they will receive an effective, unique educational opportunity focusing on the history, math, science and literature of South Carolina's water resources to encourage personal responsibility, contribution to community, and stewardship of environment.

“It is exciting to see the revelation in the faces of children when they discover first-hand how a principle from their science class comes to life onboard,” said Sarah Piwinski, Director of Education for the South Carolina Maritime Foundation. “From raising the sails using simple machines to executing a plankton tow to identify different species of organisms, middle school students are ripe for the experience and eager to learn in this environment.”

The exciting day of golf and entertainment will begin at 11:30 am with a buffet lunch in the Daniel Island Club’s luxurious dining room before each foursome sets sail with a shotgun start commencing an exclusive Captain’s Choice round of golf on the Club’s Tom Fasio signature Beresford course. An evening cocktail reception will be held on the docks at Daniel Island immediately following play featuring a tropical / nautical themed awards ceremony including hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and a steel drum solo performance.

“The Captain’s Cup golf tournament is all about making a difference in the local community by providing hands-on educational experiences for children in need,” stated Bob Moran, Family Circle Tennis Center General Manager.

“Over 150 kids were served from the proceeds of the inaugural year of this important program, and we hope to match or exceed that donation this year with continued community support.”

The first place team will receive gifts including a cruise for forty (40) aboard the Spirit of South Carolina and a name plate on the wood and brass ship’s wheel trophy to be engraved with the winner’s names and prominently displayed at the South Carolina Maritime Foundation. Duffers will also compete for prizes from Bauer International’s Island House of Charleston including Closest to the Pin honors to be rewarded with a beautiful rattan and mahogany gondola bar with brass and leather top, including three bar stools, and a personal club and shoe locker will be awarded for the Longest Drive. There will be a special prize for the player wearing the best nautical or tropical garb. Each participant will receive gift bags full of items from the Family Circle Cup and South Carolina Maritime Foundation.

“Last years Captain’s Cup Golf Tournament was a wonderful success and I look forward to this year’s event being even better,” commented Ken Bauer, Founder / President – Bauer International. “It is great to see our community embrace the mission of the Spirit of South Carolina and help the children of Cainhoy see their potential through hands-on education programs.”

A contribution of $2,000 per foursome is required by October 1st, of which $1,250 is tax deductible. For more information about this charity event, or to R.S.V.P. to participate, contact Kathy Molony at (843) 849-5310 or Kathy.Molony@familycirclecup.com.

The South Carolina Maritime Foundation’s primary mission is to operate the Spirit of South Carolina, the state’s only tall ship, which is devoted to the children of the Palmetto state. The ship serves as a mobile classroom, putting lessons of math and science to work in a practical environment, while focusing on the development of leadership qualities in our youth. It also continues to revive interest in South Carolina’s maritime history, bringing important stories and characters of the past into our lives today. Additionally, the ship acts as a roaming ambassador for the state of South Carolina, sharing our vast cultural qualities with every port she visits domestically and overseas. The foundation also operates several events with proceeds benefiting educational programs aboard the Spirit of South Carolina. These include Charleston Harbor Fest, Charleston Race Week, the Charleston to Bermuda Yacht Race, and The Spirit Ball. For additional information, see www.scmaritime.org.
