Captain’s Log 6/25 Left the shoals of Tortuga on a course set for Charleston, SC. Rumors swirl among the crew that Children’s Museum builders have engineered a pirate sloop so swift, so stealthy I won’t rest ‘til she’s mine. Capt. SLS

Calling all swashbucklers! Pirate enthusiasts young and old! The Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry (CML) needs your help! Pirates have set a course for Charleston with their eyes on the prize – the CML Pirate Ship - the very centerpiece of its brand new exhibit, Pirates!, opening Tuesday, July 7th.

Join the CML children’s brigade at 9:00 a.m. at the Charleston Maritime Center to await the pirates arrival (cannons firing!) aboard the Schooner Pride. The seafaring scoundrels will take “prisoners” for ransom, “hijack” Olde Towne Carriages to ride through town collecting gunpowder from the Powder Magazine and then descending upon the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry.

The CML brigade will then return to the Children’s Museum at 10:00 am to join forces with Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., children from Meeting Street Academy, the Boys & Girls Club Shaw Unit and Charles Webb Center for the final standoff with the pirates and the official opening of the new Pirates! exhibit. A full timeline of Pirates! siege is included in attached Photo Tip Sheet.

“Grab your foam swords and eye patches, Lowcountry families! CML has a full day of pirate fun for the whole family to enjoy!, “says CML Director, Denis Chirles. “This is a grand opening you can play a part in and one you don’t want to miss.”

To sign up to be a part of the CML Brigade, contact Christine Kelly at Christine@explorecml.org or 843.853.8962 x224 or you may RSVP on the CML Facebook Page under Pirates! Grand Opening. Families who sign up will be entered into a drawing to be selected as prisoners taken for ransom by the pirates. The first 200 families to sign up will also receive free bandanas and eye patches. Free parking will be available at the Charleston Maritime Center. CML is also encouraging families to use CARTA DASH trolleys to travel to and from the Museum and the Charleston Maritime Center. CML will provide FREE DASH Trolley passes compliments of CARTA. CARTA DASH trolleys will leave the John Street shed at 8:05, 8:13 and 8:28 for the 9:00 am event.

Admission to the Grand Opening is free for CML members and $7/per person for general public. Pirates! Grand Opening festivities also include Jolly Roger Joke Time and a Pirate Sing-A-Long with pirate re-enactors at 11:00, a performance of PURE Theater’s Rodney Lee Rogers “The Gentleman Pirate” at 1:00 (time to be confirmed) and Pirate Puppet Making with Taylor Wentworth at 3:00 pm. Raffle prizes of Family pirate tours aboard the Schooner Pride sailing vessel, Pirate Walking Tours provided by Old Charleston Walking Tours and free children’s entrée coupons from the Buccaneer Restaurant will also be given away at the Museum during the Grand Opening all day.
