The Charleston Civic Design Center is pleased to announce a new exhibition at the CCDC: TIMELESS OR OF ITS TIME?

This exhibition features the work of four Charleston architecture firms who are striving to contribute to the history of the city. The four firms represent a range of response—from traditional to cutting edge—to the challenge of the question TIMELESS OR OF ITS TIME? The exhibition will occur in two stages: from April 24th through May 24th, the work of Huff + Gooden Architects will be paired with the work of Randolph Martz, Architect; from May 29th through June 29th, the work of Gibson Thompson Guess Architects will be paired with the work of Glenn Keyes Architects. Each stage of the exhibit will demonstrate the firms’ architectural work in a variety of media, including models, drawings, photographs and projections.

This free exhibition is an extension of the TIMELESS OR OF ITS TIME? Lecture Series. For as long as it has had a sense of its own past, Charleston has been debating the appropriateness of design for historic places: should we hold to the grand traditions of the past or should we make new contributions to those traditions? What is often presented as a clear choice may, in fact, be more ambiguous: the lecture series highlighted one contemporary and one traditional viewpoint, voiced by world class architect—Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, and David Schwartz—and framed them in national and local perspectives.

These free exhibits will be on display at the Charleston Civic Design Center (85 Calhoun Street) Monday-Friday 9:00am-5:00pm. There will be opening receptions with refreshments to celebrate the beginning of each exhibit.
