South Carolina Artist Tom Stanley, "Road To Nowhere"

The George Gallery is honored to introduce "Road to Nowhere", a new solo exhibition of works by esteemed South Carolina artist Tom Stanley. The exhibition will be on view from February 20 to March 5, 2016. The artist will give a talk at the gallery on February 20 at 3:30 to discuss this latest body of work.

Tom Stanley is chair of the art department at Winthrop College. He began his career in the early 1960's and has evolved into a highly sought after painter and sculptor. His mechanical drawing style is mostly inspired by contemporary folk art imagery. Much of his work can be described as having strong symbolism, genuine narrative, and unforced simplicity.

Stanley's new series of paintings, "Road to Nowhere", relies on references to industrial design, as well as the technique of sgraffito, or drawing into wet paint. The title of the series emerges from the artist's state of mind as he completed the works. The song, "A Road to Nowhere", by Talking Heads David Byrne, which presents a resigned if not joyful look at doom, played over and over in the artist's creative consciousness.

Also in this exhibition are works from the series "Hoboken Blocks" that are an homage to modernist Alexander Calder, who attended Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. in order to study mechanical engineering prior to pursuing his artistic career.

We invite the public to join us to meet the artist, who will be at the gallery on Saturday February 20 from 3-5 pm; his talk will begin promptly at 3:30. The show will hang in its entirety until March 5.
