Event Details
This premiere of a new one-act drama is about John Laurens, the unlikely anti-slavery hero of the American Revolution from Charleston, and his relationship with his father, Henry Laurens, his British wife, Martha and secretly freed servant, Phillip...
“...unique...explosive...long overdue... a great way to introduce audiences to the bravery in battle and brilliant actions of John Laurens regarding the abolition of slavery ninety years before it ended in America..."
Michael C. Scoggins, Director, Southern Revolutionary War Institute
"John Laurens' astounding journey influenced not only a city, but a state and a young nation."
Alan Stello, the Powder Magazine, Charleston
John Laurens, an unknown hero, a young, wealthy, white student from Charleston, was fighting slavery in 1773. He said, "We have sunk the Africans and their descendants below the Standard of Humanity and almost render'd them incapable of that Blessing which equal Heaven bestow'd upon us all…we Americans…cannot contend with a good Grace, for Liberty, until we shall have enfranchised our Slaves…Where liberty is, there is my country.”
It is extremely rare to find an individual in history who was an extraordinary statesman and a brave soldier in battle. John's journey from the time he left his studies in Europe to fight the revolution, became an amazing path while serving as a top aide to George Washington and continuing his urgent fight for freedom for slaves.
This new play of adventure and romance, explores an amazing hero and his father, Henry, as two key players in the American Revolution and charts the course of their private lives and loves. It stars Broadway, film and TV veteran, Clarence Felder and local stars Robbin Knight, Adam Miles and a professional supporting cast.
