"Othello" screening at Cinebarre

Holy City Shakespeare, in collaboration with distributor Picturehouse Entertainment, will bring the Royal Shakespeare Company's current production of "Othello" from Stratford-on-Avon to the big screen at Cinebarre in Mt. Pleasant. A project called RSC Live produces high quality live recordings of performances in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, then screens them all over the world.

The story is classic tragedy. Othello is the greatest general of his age. A fearsome warrior, loving husband and revered defender of Venice against its enemies. But he is also an outsider whose victories have created enemies of his own, men driven by prejudice and jealousy to destroy him. As they plot in the shadows, Othello realizes too late that the greatest danger lies not in the hatred of others, but his own fragile and destructive pride.

Iago, the jealous villian who pushes Othello toward his destruction is usually played by a white actor, and racism plays strongly into their relationship. But in this production, Iago is played by black actor Lucian Msamati, What happens when both Othello and Iago are "outsiders" in the play's world of Venice? As reviewer for the British newspaper The Telegraph Dominic Cavendish puts it, the "crucial shift of perspective" creates "electrifying" results. In Othello's modern, racially diverse army, tensions still rise and new dynamics are created in this production.
