72 HOURS TO DINE, DRINK & DISCOVER CHARLESTON
Looking to enjoy a weekend of barbecue, bourbon, and beer with your closest crew? Book a guys’ getaway to Charleston, voted #1 Best Small City in the U.S. and Canada in Travel + Leisure‘s 2015 World’s Best Awards.
DAY ONE: YOU’VE ARRIVED
Your bachelor pad awaits at Quarters on King, a luxury boutique hotel located on iconic King Street, merely steps away from many of the Charleston area’s notable historic sites and James Beard award-winning restaurants. Get your bearings and enjoy a refreshing cold beer from the fully stocked fridge. Ready to head out? Grab the guys and hustle to The Alley, a 16,780-square foot reclaimed warehouse that features eight lanes of retro bowling and a 40-foot bar made from recycled bowling lane wood. Once you’ve bowled up an appetite, make your way to High Cotton to enjoy Lowcountry favorites such as buttermilk fried oysters and Lowcountry boil in a classic Charleston setting complete with heart pine floors and antique brick. The night isn’t over just yet. Bulleir Bourbon, Jameson Whiskey, Oban Scotch; pick your poison! Head to the rooftop at STARS and be sure to keep the tab open.
DAY TWO: ADVENTURE AWAITS
Kick your morning off at Virginia’s on King. Order a round of Bloody Marys along with an Oyster Po’ Boy Sandwich, Country Ham and Eggs, or Buttermilk Pancakes… or opt for all of the above. Now that you’re fueled for a day on the water, explore cool and shaded blackwater swamps, rivers, and historic rice plantations alongside elusive alligators and river otters with Nature Adventure Outfitters. Can you spot the 1,000-year-old cypress tree or 300-year-old church overlooking thousands of acres of rice fields where eagles nest? Retreat to Quarters on King to rejuvenate or head directly to Charleston Distilling Co. for a taste of their farm-fresh, handcrafted spirits. Time for dinner! Choose from a wide selection of ceviche at COAST, a former indigo warehouse that overlooks the alley between John and Huston streets in the upper King Street neighborhood. Inside, 40-foot ceilings, rustic tin accents, and taxidermy blowfish chandeliers give this restaurant an eclectic beach bar vibe. Ask the bartender to make you a Bonecrusher… just don’t ask him to list the ingredients! The drinks will continue to flow at Prohibition, Charleston’s modern American jazz-themed bar. Choose from an extensive list of specialty draft beers, whiskeys, and award-winning cocktails.
DAY THREE: HIT THE FAIRWAYS BEFORE THE HIGHWAY
From tidal tributaries to the Atlantic Ocean, the pristine waters surrounding Charleston produce an abundance of shrimp, fish, oysters, clams, and crabs. Picturesque Shem Creek in the town of Mt. Pleasant is home to a fleet of hardworking shrimp boats that ensure fresh seafood is abundantly available in Charleston. Snag a taste of the bounty with a bowl of Shrimp & Grits at Tavern & Table. Browsing the drink menu? Go on; order the Man-Mosa complete with Schofferhofer Grapefruit beer + New Amsterdam vodka. It’s time to hit the fairways before hitting the highway home. Did you know the first golf club in America was established in Charleston in 1786? Today, golfers have the opportunity to play scores of spectacular courses in Charleston—from picturesque fairways built on the site of a legendary Revolutionary War battle to an epic oceanfront course that has hosted the Ryder Cup, the Senior PGA Championship and the PGA Championship. Tee it up at Dunes West Golf Club, a course as deeply rooted in history as the game itself.
